How the Fund Describes Itself:
Since its inception in 1977, Matrix Partners has been dedicated to helping outstanding entrepreneurs build successful companies. Our mission is helping our founders and management teams build the next great companies of tomorrow and often entire new industries. We bring the collective resources of the Partnership to each investment, giving you, the entrepreneur, access to all of our experience. Our approach sets us apart from most other venture firms and is the reason why so many of our successful entrepreneurs, when starting their next company, return to Matrix first. This approach has propelled Matrix Partners to be the most successful venture firm in the United States during the last ten years with its last three partnerships having record- setting returns.

People like Desh Deshpande and Dan Smith, the founders of Cascade Communications and Sycamore Networks, David Skok, the founder of Watermark Software and SilverStream Software, Jim Dolce and Kurt Melden, the founders of Redstone Communications, Gordon Hoffstein, the founder of PC's Compleat and Be Free, Rubin Gruber, the founder of VideoServer and Sonus Networks, Bing Yang, the founder of Cadia Networks or Monte Zweben, the founder of Red Pepper Software and Blue Martini Software. Not only did they, as well as many others, come see us first, they literally began operations in our dedicated space for entrepreneurs.

Still has an east coast bias but I believe that Matrix has the all-time record perfoming fund. Kleiner's Google fund may have beat it but I don't think so. Matrix is an incredibly high quality shop.
