All great businesses start small. AT&T, Verizon, ADT, Texas electricity providers and even Nintendo – they all had small starts going from humble beginnings to the business giants you know and love today and new businesses are being born almost every hour in hopes of striking it out of the park and becoming industry greats like those who came before them. However, in this country and in this economy it can be difficult getting your business off the ground and, sadly, without the right amount of hard work, funding and marketing, your dream could be over before it even starts.

But how does venture capital come into play? Venture capital is financial capitals that is awarded to high risk yet high reward companies that are just starting out. With the market being as competitive as it is, some new businesses with limited operating history just can’t make the kind of capital that they need on their own, which is how venture capital can really be beneficial to a struggling startup. However, as a general rule, venture capitalist are usually very selective about the business that they decide to invest in often looking for defining characteristics like new or novel uses of technology, a well-thought out and convincing business model and ways in which their investment will pay them back in the long run.

It is actually estimated that many venture capitalists invest in about one in every four hundred businesses that are up for review. These investments are rare, but not unreasonable – especially when you consider the risk.

The number one and most important role that a venture capitalist plays is in the “development” of a business. Simply put, they help a small business that is getting started become a full-fledged company.

The venture capitalist does this by finding or raising funds for the small or beginning business so that it can grow. They will seek out money from groups or private investors that are willing to realize the growth of a business.

Venture capitalists are very personable. They are networking and meeting new people almost constantly. They have to know investors that are willing to potentially put their money into new ideas.

The breed, known as a venture capitalist has to keep up with growing trends and new business developments that take place every day. They have to determine if start-ups have the potential to become great and make a lot of money for them, as well as the other investors.

Venture capitalists are smart strategists and experts in tactics that help grow a business from ground level. They are then willing to let this company go public or be sold to another company so that they and the other investors will realize monetary gain and profits.

In case you haven’t noticed trends as of late have been moving more toward the web. There have been incredible gains made in this area of venture investing recently. If you have any doubt about this just consider the rapid rise of “social media sites”. Where forums of this variety were almost non-existent a few years ago, businesses find it difficult to make any substantial gains without a brand image somewhere in the field today.

Relatively speaking investments don’t necessarily need to even be as substantial as the old brick and mortar start-ups of the past. With lower overhead and operating costs, a few dollars can go a long way. This gives you the opportunity to reap rich rewards, with the benefit of a lower risk quotient to your overall investment portfolio.

Online services that cater to real world needs will be more likely to pay off in the long term. Sites that offer convenient transition from non-internet based to internet based services will cause less confusion among the prospective clients and generally enjoy a more enthusiastic reception. Rewards available to the scrupulous venture investors can be unlimited and residual.

In my opinion the smart money is going to follow the trend, while still being focused on the areas that have paid off well in the past. Offering products and/or services that will continue to be in demand.

It is difficult to find ways to make profits in today’s market no matter what you are doing. It seems that the market has tightened up so much on anything that squeezing out a dollar is difficult. However, there are still things that can be done in order to make a buck in the venture capitalism market. You just have to be willing to work on projects that you might not have worked on in the past.

The best thing to do to try to generate profits as a venture capitalist in a tight market is to limit the number of ventures you are pouring money into. There are going to be fewer to choose from anyway, so this shouldn’t be that difficult to do. You want to limit the choices because there are going to simply be too many that fail. It is actually a good time to protect your money and not take risks that you might take in a better market. There just is no good market to bail you out in the event that you mistakenly pick out an investment that just does not work out as well as you had hoped. This is why you should limit the investments that you are putting money into.

Where can you earn money as a venture capitalist? Is it really possible to just put your money into any small business and expect something to happen? Of course not! You have to carefully determine which small businesses are worthy of receiving the funds that you are going to provide to them. This means that you need to run some tests to see if any particular venture is going to be something that you want to be involved with.

Once you have discovered the ventures that you are going to place your money into, then it is just a matter of setting up the transaction with the business owner. You have to get a legal document of some kind that details the agreement that the two of you have for an exchange of money for a piece of the company. You will certainly want to have this in legal document form so that you are not liable to some kind of scam. You need to have documents that back you up in court in case something goes wrong in other words.

Being a venture capitalist can be a very rewarding life. It is just a matter of making sure that you do your proper research and never put up money for something that completely fails on you.
